A notary public is a public officer who plays an important role in the legal system. The primary function of a notary public is to serve as an impartial witness in various legal and financial transactions to prevent fraud and ensure the authenticity of documents. Here are some of the key responsibilities and duties of a notary public:

  1. Verifying identities: A notary public verifies the identities of the parties involved in a transaction by checking their identification documents, such as passports, driver’s licenses, or government-issued IDs. This helps ensure that the individuals signing the document are who they claim to be.
  2. Administering oaths and affirmations: Notaries have the authority to administer oaths and affirmations. In certain cases, individuals may need to swear an oath or affirm the truthfulness of a statement made in a document. The notary ensures that the oath is properly taken and recorded.
  3. Witnessing signatures: One of the main roles of a notary public is to witness the signing of documents. By witnessing the signatures, the notary confirms that the individuals willingly and voluntarily signed the document. This is crucial for the document’s validity and enforceability.
  4. Certifying copies: Notaries may be authorized to certify copies of original documents. They compare the copy with the original and, if they are satisfied with its accuracy, they affix their seal and signature to the copy, indicating that it is a true and accurate reproduction of the original.
  5. Administering notarial acts: Notaries can perform various notarial acts, depending on the jurisdiction. These acts may include acknowledgments (where the signer acknowledges their signature and its authenticity), jurats (where the signer swears or affirms the truthfulness of the contents of the document), and other types of certifications.
  6. Maintaining records: Notaries are typically required to maintain a record, known as a notary journal or register, of the notarial acts they perform. This journal contains information about the document, the parties involved, the type of notarial act performed, and other relevant details. It serves as a crucial record for legal purposes.

It’s important to note that the specific duties and powers of a notary public can vary depending on the jurisdiction and the laws and regulations of the particular country or state where they are commissioned.
